Yep, it's this weekend and the race will be out at Superbowl.
I'll be making an inspection on the course tomorrow afternoon and also on Friday. Expect updates here on that and also if the weather gets dodgy and rainy. I won't be mucking around with the decision - if it is raining the night before and on the morning of the race, don't expect to race. I will try and make the call ASAP. Race transition will be a bit further down Tallowood Rd after the exit from "mini-cabbage tree" or the "squiggle track" to incorporate an end-of-lap sprint area followed immediately by the finish line. On your FINAL lap you will be "chuted" down the remainder of Tallowood Rd, heading towards East Stump Rd, so that you can recover and rehydrate after your epic sprint finish against your arch nemesis. PLEASE DO NOT loiter in the race transition area on completing your lap. You will be asked to move. We had a collision at the last race between a stationary rider and a rider clippingalong at near 40 km/ph during the last Cabbage Tree round and these collisions are potentially worth a call to the St. John Ambulance service and totally avoidable. I WILL be creating a go slow area prior to the timing tent but will be after the finish line, which WILL slow riders down to walking pace. The sprint area is provided for racing and overtaking - the transition area is provided for the orderly procession of riders past the timing tent to enable the timing crew to record numbers into the timing gear with the minimum chance of error to enable accurate race results and timely publication of those results and lap times onto the Club website. A sprint area and a transition area can not be the same thing. Please bear with the process and regard the go-slow area as a pit area rather than a part of the race track. Dave and Jill Tuckerman of the Bike Shack will be bringing out the current stock of SCUM jerseys and knicks out to the race. Payment is by cash and cheque. Limited stock and sizes available. It's very good quality riding clothing for a great price. 85.00 for a jersey and 110.00 for the full bib knicks.
Stay posted for more info and a layout of the new race transition arrangements.
Regards
Kel Hockey

New Tranisiton area location. You won't be able to park your car in the sprint lane - that would be dangerous and silly. Try and park your car in the area indicated and ride your bike to rego in the morning. Too easy.

I rode superbowl today. It is in ordinary condition. Motos, rain and heavy braking have left the track quite rutted. Also a tree has come down interfering with the race line. Also quite sandy in many of the corners. Can help with maintenance mid week if organised???

I've been out on the course and Chaterracing's description is accurate. The downhill section is loose and rutted. Of particular note is the sweeping right hand corner with the log step on the LH side and the inside line to the right. This is especially ripped up and loose. To describe the track would be dry, loose, sandy and rutted.
As the sign says on one of the gully bridges "If in Doubt, Dismount". I'd advise caution on the track in it's current condition, namely the two big sweeping right hand downhill corners in the decent into the bowl itself.
The weatherman is predicting an overcast day with a light NE wind blowing with the weather conditions deteriating after 12pm with a strong southerly change and rainfall in the late afternoon. So if he is to be trusted, the racee conditions in the morning will be ideal, but we need to be gone by 12pm.
Will make another update at 6am tomorrow morning. After coffee.

They weren't looking forward to the race in the morning after we backed up from a 3hr in Canberra the arvo before but after the race they were absolutely buzzing. Talked about nothing else for the next hour on the way home. Track was a lot of fun - bit loose and sketchy in places but I think I kinda enjoyed that. Big thanks to the track dudes. Picked up the new SCUM kit too while I was in town - looks fricken fantastic. Mate wants one as well now!

107 riders out on course. I am sure that is record attendance at Superbowl for a monthly round.
The sprint finish area worked "okay" but some further thought is required for Superbowl. The problem is where to have cars parked. I think one solution is to move the start finish line back to the intersection of Butterfly and East Stump Rd.
My thanks to Craig Hockings and Jason Fisher for working in the timing tent. It was pretty hectic at times and it was so fortunate that Peter Windley came out for an hour as he organised the rider brief and starting the race.
A huge thank you to Ross Harden for assisting a junior rider who came into transition with a sore limb.
Just a quick word to the masses. We now have 2 computers for registration, but it means we need 2 people per computer to enter in rider details on the computer and on the paper copy AND we need a 5th person to handle day licences and memberships. 5 volunteers are a lot I hear you cry, but we only need this level of help from around 7.30 am to around 8.45 am which is when the bulk of people show up for rego.
Henry and Judy Wakeford proved at Cabbage Tree that rego for 124 people can be achieved by having this level of manning in the timing tent. I proved at Superbowl that 3 people are NOT enough and the race started at 9.30 and only because Pete Windley dropped in and got the show on the road literally.
If you see 3 or less people in the timing tent during rego, it is 2 less than what is required.
Anyone can help out - ANYONE. Even if you have your lycra and race face on. The club is getting bigger, but not the volunteer base. The Club NEEDS more people to step up and volunteer to help or we are going to have a lot of events were the race will not be able to be started for a good 30 minutes or an hour past the advertised start time because the race registers and race director is under the pump so much trying to register 100+ riders in under an hour. We now have the equipment but we need the people to operate it.
We only need 2 people to sit out the race to do the timing DURING the race (riders please slow down in transition so they can see your number) - anyone else can help out for an hour during the registration phase of a race by scribing, entering details into the computer or assisting people filling out MTBA day licences and memberships. Ten minutes before the advertised start of the race, you can choof off and make your final preparations for your race. Any help during the pre-race rego stage would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Kel.

Thanks Craig, Jason and Kel for timing the race - I reckon you may have got nearly as dusty as the riders, especially on those starts!
Also thanks Ross for checking if Sascha was OK. I stopped and talked to her near the end of her first lap and told her to stop if her wrist was sore, and even tho I knew she was not seriously hurt and Ben would be back soon with his broken derailleur, it was nice to hear you looked after her in between. Its that kind of thing that makes mountain biking at SCUM such a great family sport. Thanks.

Interim results have been sent to the SCUM Webguru for uploading. There are a number of anomalies in the results, so if you are affected, please contact timing@scum.asn.au

As the race director of this race, I am working with Henry to fill quite sizable holes in the race result data from the Rnd 2 race. Henry has spent most of Monday afternoon and night to get the race results to some semblance of a set of race results. At the end of the day, as the race director, I am the one responsible for the timekeeping and record keeping for the race. Henry is doing the best with what he has to work with. I need to find out who was riding under race numbers 2, 10 and 15. If you know who these riders were, could you please e-mail timing@scum.asn.au or sectres@scum.asn.au with the info. Regards Kel.

A good week of training was finished up with a visit to SCUM on Sunday. SCUM held the second round of their XC series at Superbowl which this week featured some loose and sandy descents. With less categories to ride in this year you can easily be riding next to National XC Series representatives or even a National Champion. But this didn't stop many new people from riding on the day, just to check out what all the fuss is about.
In the race and in the lead the real fast boys blew off the front after a lap. Josh Carlson continually put small amounts of time on his rivals and bike shop owners Paul “Berry Mt Cycles” Trayner and Shane “Bikes at the Basin” Wood. Back just a little further I tussled with Dave “The Bike Shack” Tuckerman as he made ground over the climbs and I pulled him back through the remainder of the course. Dave was fully aware that he had to put in the extra effort to keep me off his tail. Not far behind us were other riders who just couldn’t make the gap we had over them and continued to loose small amounts of time to us over the five laps. There was some good racing in A Grade.
Thanks have to go to Richard and Tracy who gave me a place to stay on the Saturday night. Good luck to Richard and his team as they head towards the Mont later in the month
Products on trial at the moment include Verofit Regeneration, Jetblack Lock-on grips, ESI foam grips and Fox XC gloves.

Cabbage Tree night race Friday 5th, redgo open at 5:30 pm race start at 7:00 pm. The race is for 2 hours so if you go past the timing tent at 8:59 you can choose to do another lap or call it a night. The track was a little damp today, fingers crossed for fine weather to dry it out and we should see some good racing. The timing tent will have a slow though area so that the time keepers can read your numbers . Hope to see everyone there it should be a great night. cheers Whitto.
