I have been attending the recently formed "Shoalhaven Cycling Inc" as a representative for SCUM. Other representatives are from Shoalhaven BMX and Nowra Velo Club.
You may have heard in the news recently developments concerning the use of the old North Nowra tip as cycling mecca. A proposal has been lodged with the General Manager of the Shoalhaven City Council to develop the site for MTB, BMX and a road circuit. The MTB track will skirt the boundary of the land.
On Tuesday the 4th of Feb the proposal went before the Shoalhaven Sports Board, who endorsed the proposal.
The General Manager (Corporate and Community Services) forwarded the proposal to the Department of Primary Industries Crown Land Division, seeking Owners’ comments on the proposal and consider the option to investigate the feasibility of a cycling complex in Council’s 2015/16 Work Plan.
This motion went through unopposed.
So what does this mean? Firstly, this is great news! While it is not a given that we will get the land, we have good support for the proposal. National Parks and Wildlife have indicated that they are supportive of the proposal.
Good support from many Councillors has been received and very strong support from Gareth Ward, the state member for Kiama. Given that 2015 is an election year, he seems very, very keen to help.
The development of this site is not intended to replace any existing SCUM trail, but rather add a starting point for visitors/new riders to give a taste of what SCUM has to offer and then point them to the other SCUM trails.
What needs to be done now - nothing. When the proposal is approved and the land granted (may be sometime away yet), SCUM assistance will be required to design and build the track.
Henry.
