XTerra - Asia-Pacific Championships - Callala

You may have already heard about this but if not XTerra is really an off-road triathlon. And this is the Asia-Pacific Champs so there will be some seriously fit and skilled blokes and ladies doing their stuff. But that doesn't mean the rest of us can't participate or come along to check it out.

Australia's looking good too with Wollongong's Benny Allen ranking right up there.

What.?
XTERRA ASIA-PACIFIC CHAMPIONSHIP & XTERRA SPRINT
Saturday, 26 April, 2014
8AM Sprint Start – 11AM Championship Start
Championship Distance: 1.5K ocean swim, 29K mountain bike and 12K trail run.
Sprint Distance: 750m ocean swim, 14.4K mountain bike and 6K trail run.
Divisions: Pro/elite, Age Group men and women – 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65+(W), 65-69(M), 70-74(M), 75+(M), challenged.
Race as part of a team: 2-3 persons – men, women and coed – can race as a team in either the championship full-distance race or the sprint distance.
Championship Pro prize money: AUD$50,000 to elites
Awards: Top 3 in each age group division
Australian residents racing in the championship event are eligible for the XTERRA Australia Championship title – pro and all age group divisions.
Official 2014 XTERRA World Championship Qualifier: Championship race only. 41 total slots. Unclaimed slots roll-down.

When.?
If any of the local Jervis Bay residence would consider accommodating (Home Stay) some of the international Professional athletes competing in the Xterra Asia-Pacific Championships?
Approximate dates 24th-28th April..

Why.?
It is very expensive traveling to the race from abroad and if we (Aussie’s) could help out by providing them a place to stay in the lead up to the race, it would make life a little bit easier for them. I have currently four international athletes staying with me. I know that they would be very grateful for the assistance and provide the host family with great opportunity to learn about the sport, create a friendship & a unique cultural experience for the whole family. I have raced along side many of them and they are very friendly, appreciative and kind hearted. The athletes I assure you will be no trouble at all.!

Riders,
The Xterra crew need our help. They are after volunteers for marshaling duties across the event weekend.
SCUM is on show to the world here so lets do our bit to make this event the success it deserves.
If you're keen to get out there and watch some of the worlds best athletes compete at world class level contact Kirsty and let her know what times you can help out. They will be grateful and SCUM will be to.

We have roles available across our site, Bike Course & Run Course – we will find a role that you will love.

We have positions available on Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday morning, come and enjoy the event and watch world class athletes compete!

Free lunch pack & water each day

$50 donation to your sporting club for each shift/day that someone volunteers their time

Dropped out and picked up from marshalling positions by our Course Managers (or they can of course bike out:))

A great day out in the sun & making the event a great success!

For those who missed the XTERRA ASIA-PACIFIC CHAMPIONSHIP held at Callala last weekend here is a brief video of some of the action.

For those who don't know what Xterra is, it is an offroad triathalon, or a mountain bike race proceeded by and followed by some weird form of physical activity which involves water and shoes with fluro laces.
There were a few SCUM members competing and I will leave space here for them to write a race report.
I was Bike marshall 3. This placed me at the Coondoo trail head monitoring the riders. Holy crap those elite riders are fast! These guys must be mountain bikers who have learnt to swim and can run a bit.
Post race feedback from competitors was that the course was awesome and they can't wait to do it again next year. Yes this event will be held again in 2015 and in 2016.
Thanks to the SCUM members who helped with this event. The event organizers are very appreciative of volunteer help and have made a monetary contribution to the club.
The more members that help out the bigger the contribution will be. So next year it would be good to see more members pitching in.
Xterra had their own TV crew there and will produce a show for US TV. Hopefully we will get to see it here.
