Held on Saturday evening at Yellowmundee, WSMTB once again put on a festive atmosphere with a BBQ, music, sponsor stalls and a live interview of MTBA's President Gillian Duncan, not that I stopped to partake in of the activities.
With over 90 entrants in a wide range of categories the start line was packed, WSMTB's "Big Dog" lead away. It was a short 5-6km course, not the big 8hr 10ker, and had many highlights. I especially enjoyed the smooth, flowing berm section. Another highlight was a tricky section combining a short steep downhill followed by a mesh bridge and a technical climb. Everything was going along swimmingly, I had got a fair start and was in a good rhythm the course. The numerous wide spots gave plenty of opportunities for passing and everyone was being quite civilised.
At this point around 2hr mark the coin flipped and I punctured. I quickly cursed the MTB Gods (as I was still running a very similar setup to the SCOTT and had no issues there) and hastily made the tube exchange. I would like to thank the guy, who knowingly lent me somebody else’s floor pump, after gingerly making it back to transition. Back at pressure, battery connected, pockets filled with fuel and a new bottle, it took me a lap to settle back in.

It got dark quickly and I just kept going and going. It was a enjoyable nightride, the most exciting section was a closely wooded section that made it seem like you were going doubly fast. At around 10:15 pm I made my final pass of the timing tent making 10 laps.
Placings and prizes with to the top 3 of each category, I scraped in at 5th. Thanks to WSMTB for putting on a good event, my supporters FRSPlus and Bikes at the Basin for getting me there.
