The weather kept mostly away for the first round of a wsmtb based summer 4hr series. In the pack were a few surprises, Josh Carlson and a whippet from Canberra. Another rider of note was the fourth placing, at the scott24, Shane Taylor. It all started a bit fast and I got caught up behind a few people heading into the single track. The leaders made two minutes on me the first lap. This is pretty much how the rest of the race went, I would make my way through the field, slowly bring back any fast starters. It got to a point where the lead group had made so much time on me; they would pass me going the other way at about the half way mark. Results are as follows; The Carlsonator punched in second after an unfortunate incident early in the race, no enough time on the rear wheel I heard. Shane came in as bridesmaid again with a fourth, better luck next time. And me, seventh, a 20min lap down. So it has been a while since I last raced, just need to spend some more quality time on the bike. We had 35 in our solo class and only three in the SS class. Could I? So they put on a fairly good event, only one surprise with a dodgy climb that I had to switch to granny ring around the half way mark. If you have every raced at yellamundie (spelling) then you know the rest of the track. The main bit they missed was the fast DH section that runs parallel to the main road, into the tight bit with the bridge to the little climb up to the sand stone section. They also didn’t have a BBQ and my support crew wasn’t happy. But that’s racing in the w/suburbs. The next in the series is a Saturday arvo ride about the 6th of December.

They had a turn out of just over 100, which seems small for that club. Could be to do with all the other smashing events an the same day. I hear it was wet (like the WET that I first raced (rode really, I didnt know what I was doing) in with SCUM) down here. I am sure Shane and Dave have all the brake pad/cable needs for a bike resorection. Just dont wash your bike in the creek or dam, thats what I heard from Duck. Then there was a big race up past Sydney, could have drawn the other crowd as well (Lefty?).

Yes mate you probably saved yourself some bike repairs.
The SS held up well, its rider, not so well.

WSMTB really have some serious issues to deal with however. The transition was scary - for a couple of hours the PA blasted bad late 70s stuff (Fleetwood Mac, Bryan Ferry) and as we headed into the last hour I swear they were doling out Bros and early BackStreet Boys. I had a 90sec deficit on the rider in the place in front of me to chase down in my last lap of the day, and had to do it without any way of getting bad 80s pop out of my head. That's just not right..............

Then there was a big race up past Sydney, could have drawn the other crowd as well (Lefty?). They where hoping for 450 riders and I think they got em. No "official" results as yet, although Farkin.net had these results this afternoon: Solo Men 1. Jason English 15 laps 8:09:20 2. Hamish Elliot 15 laps 8:25:59 3. Hugh Stodart 14 laps 8:31:27 Solo Women 1. Katrin van der Spiegel 13 laps 8:47:11 (who was Hamoed into an extra lap by hugh) 2. Vanina Vergoz 12 laps 8:57:44 3. Justine Leahey 11 Laps Saw Troy Glennan there as well. Just waiting to see how I went.

Yep, that was me. First time I have spun the legs in anger this calendar year, thanks to an 8mth old, and they (my legs) were pretty angry with me. It didn''t help that the last lap was racing for the illustrious heights of 9th place in the pairs, and after a full lap swapping the lead and sitting on each others' wheel we had a sprint (well as much, or little, as we could muster) finish up the hill. I so need to get some more ks in the legs. If you were the guy in the FRS jersey, I gotta confess that there was a bit of wheel-sitting on my part being dragged back up the hill to transition......

I gotta confess that there was a bit of wheel-sitting on my part being dragged back up the hill to transition...... Sure, it is all cool. Thats what endurance racing is all about, not the leg whipping high HR stuff some of the guys do. Got four hours and no one else to chat with. Catch you next time with lights blazing!

Second round of the series was held on Saturday afternoon.
The weather was warm with little to no breeze. The forecast was uncertain; maybe a storm as a southerly front would come through.
The track was yellamundie and with the conditions similar to many of the times I have ridden there. Sandy in patches but mostly hard packed track with sections of loose over hard. It was run using the same parts of track as last time, about six km in length.
The results were similar to the first round. The whippets were out and flogging themselves.
The whippets smashed the top places, notable places were Shane Taylor, No. 4 @scott24 came in 5th. I beat Josh Carlson for the first time with a respectable 9th. Josh only made two and a half hours, had another incident, again not enough time on one wheel. Fenz only punched out two hot laps.
Only five girls entered solo, with most of them not completing the four hours.
Four SSers came out to play, with the top placing guys doing some consistent laps.
Three teams entered mixed pairs, two in threes mixed.
I didn’t hear much bad music from the pa, but then I didn’t spend time in the area. The racing was good, with a fairly casual attitude from most. My Mongoose Canaan Team from Bikes at the Basin worked a treat all afternoon, so comfortable that I don’t like getting off it. May have to change my pit-stops to no-stops, probably would work better.
Next race of the series is on the 11th for January.

The last and final round of the summer series was run and won on the weekend.
The weather was warm and the track all dry and very loose to sandy in sections. The same track configuration was used as the previous times, so a six km loop with lap times around the 20-25 minute mark.
There was no supprises as many people had converged on this wsmtb track for a spot of racing. From the likes of Matt Fleming and a few XC whippets to distance extrodares like Mr English and Shane Taylor, it was on to see who liked the 4hr time frame better.
Things were the usual with a mass bunch start and the best riders leading off into the single track smashing 15-20 minute laps. The rest of us were condemed to a conga line and a two lap warm up.
Results of note; Shane Taylor in 6th and myself in 11th, a lap down. With a hundred solo males it was more like recent 8hr events than previous races of the series.
I think the racing was good, I only had some issues going into the final hour with a couple of cramps. The Canaan worked well throughout the race.
Thanks to my support crew who kept my stops to just seconds.

Overall for the series I placed 4th in solo mens, just shy of a new track pump./quote] I got one for 3rd in pairs. Pretty happy with that cause I needed a new one. Glad I was not the only person cramping - my last couple of laps really hurt. But heaps of fun and everybody seemed out to enjoy themselves so no aggro to deal with. Seemed like there were lots of beginners out there on the day too which is a good thing. Hoping this series becomes a permanent fixture on the race calendar. 204 entries in total for the race I think. Good turnout for a club race.
