I'm putting together a single speed, slowly, and I'm looking to prepare myself for it. There a few things that I am unsure about being a single speeder so I come asking questions from the SCUM brethren. 1. Should I stop grooming now? The bike is about 3 months from being finished. 2. As a owner of a single speed bike, as well as others, do I need to mention what I rode on my forum posts? eg "I went and checked coondoo on my single speed" 3. Can I wear Lycra on a Single speed? 4. Are there any side effects? Any advice would be welcomed ;D

There a few things that I am unsure about being a single speeder so I come asking questions from the SCUM brethren. 1. Should I stop grooming now? The bike is about 3 months from being finished. Stop now and you should be ok. Also stop showering 2 weeks before to get the required 'hardman singlespeeder smell'2. As a owner of a single speed bike, as well as others, do I need to mention what I rode on my forum posts? eg "I went and checked coondoo on my single speed" Every sentence must end in On my single speed no matter how far you go. E.G. I rode to the shop to get the paper today, on my single speed. Then stand back and wait for the onlookers to worship you3. Can I wear Lycra on a Single speed? Only if you want to be teased about liking members of the same sex4. Are there any side effects? YesAny advice would be welcomed ;D But no matter how hard you try you will never be as cool as these guys ;D

You would be surprised how much grooming is needed to get that authentic SS look. You think that matted hair is unwashed - I have to spend a fortune on extensions. Those sideburns that go to my jawline didn't happen by themselves - I gotta whole bathroom cabinet full'o'creams and potions to get the depth and richness just right.
Oh, and a couple more things. You ride SS, never singlespeed. You have to have at least one part of the bike that is was ordered from some boutique British company that only makes bits for fixies (like, I dunno, a 16t cog that is handmachined and costs 130 pound) which noone but a bike courier (who actually lives at home with mum and dad in Pymble or Woollahra but would never tell you that) will ever notice. And when you post on any forum anywhere, don't just mention the SS, but you have a moral obligation from your new high ground to say something off-the-cuff that sinks the slipper into geared bikes. Possibly try..
"I went to check out Coondoo on the SS. Passed some guy on a ten grand rig who had his derailliuer broken off by a stick"

Very wise words indeed. And did I mention that today i did the Gong ride SS, and I also saw many a geared bike with issues along the way. I didn't get a flat so I never got to you use my way cool boutique wheel spanner come beer opener ;D And to top it off you need a photo in a classic location

WOW! I had the impression that you went single speed, sorry, ss because you didn't like thinking, hence my dabble in the area, but what is becoming apparent is that whilst riding ss you can shut the noggin off it's the amount of effort and thought that goes into "being" a Single speeder, or is that a ss'er, that is so inhibiting! Still I am undetered I will continue my ss venture and one day I look forward to mocking some poor geared-up type person thingy on a forum post some where, if only I can catch one.

Now I am getting worried! I went through my box of left over bits and then raided the DIYMTB bin next door and chucked it all together and my SS is only a chain, cog and tensioner away from finished. What worries me is that I think it looks quite good, the forks are rigid and arn't supposed to be and some other bits are dodgy, but the simple non cluttered look of the bars and drive train have an appeal that I wasn't expecting. Am I changing? I don't know but if anyone knows where I can get a good middleburn 16t cog from could you let me know. ;D

OK my final post on this thread! Went out and checked Coondoo today, on my SS, unfortunately the motos had chewed out the first section but it should recover. There were a lot of sticks that may concern those who ride geared rigs. I now understand why that last hill is called "Stand and Deliver". The only other thing that concerned me as a first up SSer was that as I finished my ride I realized that I hadn't put my helmet on . Not sure what that means? Thanks for the banter it's been fun:D Matt
