This was the third time I have competed in the various versions of SCUM's end of year 30/60km fun ride. This year the track designer was offering a massive 30km loop consisting of sections from popular the Butterfly and Superbowl single tracks. The 30km loop was to also include open fire trail sections, power-line climbs and old moto single tracks. There was promise of a free BBQ too. It was a mixed race but the highlights for me included a great start on the one km or so of fire-trail heading into the first section of single track around the top five. The lead riders make the mistake of taking the beginners track giving me the lead through to the next section of fire-trail. I finally figured the small block eights have had their day as over the first half of the lap I struggled to keep the rear end firmly planted though corners. In the dry dusty conditions the semi slick nature of the rear tyre just didn't suit. Time to try a different tread. In the end...... Stiff and sore I feasted on the free watermelon and BBQ. It was again terrific work by the SCUM team to put on such a great event, online rego via MTBA, two computers on the day for rego, port-a-loo, BBQ and great atmosphere. Could these type of ride become more regular on the SCUM calendar in the future? Abbreivated from mcrummy.blogspot.com

Just wanted to say a big thanks to all the organisers of not only the 30k/60k races but also the whole SCUM 2009 season. After 10 years of coaching my own distance running squad, organising a cross country running series, track events, and fun runs I have a deep appreciation of the passion, dedication and efforts that people put in to to make sporting events work. Thanks guys! It was my first year of mountain bike racing and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I entered Sport B to help me to learn more about the sport and race some riders who could teach me a few things. They sure did! My times improved throughout the year and I finished 4th in Sport B. Thanks also to Ian Watt, who raced handlebar-to-handlebar with me all year. It was great battle, really exciting. To Jasmine, who crashed in the 30k race. It looked really spectacular from my angle (5 metres off your back wheel)!!! For a split second I was wondering whether I was going to run over you or hit your cartwheeling bike. My speedo hit a max speed of 42kph, and I'd say we were just about on that when Jasmine crashed...ouch! Hope you're ok Jasmine and recovering quickly. Thanks again guys. Can't wait til next year. Have a good xmas and new year. Geoff Lockhart
