I have been riding some of the new Hygia Aspire brakes from DIYMTB and thought I would give a quick review.
When I first used them I thought that I had a problem with my forks because the front dived so much but after checking pressures I realized that these brakes simply had a heap of power, a lot more than my previous brakes (7's) anyway. I've been using them now for 3 months and have found them to be very powerful but very usable. When that gentle touch is required they are smooth but when you need to stop they will stop you. I've moved them in so as to be able to use a one finger braking position for better control and a more balanced setup.
The Cannon Ball test, McFails fire trail, was done in 35 degree heat and with my 100kg frame pushing them down hill they stood up well, no fade, no over heating, no over shooting corners and rider and bike unharmed.
I'm sold on the Aspire but will look to get some Hygia Elite for some bling value on my 'SS'
Cheers Matt

Yeah it's funny but I really like the look of the Usagi too, but on a bike the Elites are really striking and despite the white the Usagi seems to blend in where the Elite is more of an Extrovert
Dave has them in the shop if anyone wants to see what the hell I'm going on about...

The thing I like about them is that the price which has that F&R lettering next to it. 220.00 odd wingwangs to a "brake set", rather than "per end".
Might even get me off the cable brakes..apparently that is a big fault in my riding anyway.

Hygia Elite. I know I started this thread banging on about the Aspires but I got some of the Elites as well and have been using them since Christmas. I've used them for general trail riding and on the all the SCUM tracks and have found them great. The thing that really stands out for me is how smooth they are, like when coming down slippery sections of super bowl or butterfly the take-up of the breaking is predictable, smooth and reliable. This was also great for cabbage where I try use the brakes as little as possible but with the Elites it was very easy to "feather" them and check speed without slowing down, hope that makes sense? I can't say I've given them a Cannonball smashing but I will be confident in them when the time comes. And yes they are very blingy! Check out Groots Goon Mobile in the gallery at www.diymtb.com.au. Cheers Matt

Yeah, so I brought these Hygia Aspire black brakes a little while ago. They are anodised black and they have these way cool black hoses that connect the black brake lever to the black rotor-caliper thing. Actually, everything is black. Except the rotors. They are a metal colour. I wish they were black. The black brakes work better than linear pull brakes and seem to work better than cable disk brakes. I previously had Avid BB5s on the 29er Hardtail I own (they were black too, but had this annoying big red dial for the pad adjustment - it should have been black). These ones pull me up pretty fast and I have whacked on a couple hundred metres on the bike's skidometre since fitting the brakes. Did I mention the blackness? Very black.... All up, 8 of 10 rubber chickens. Kel.
