I've just returned from a holiday up the north coast of NSW where we stayed at south west rocks. One of the first things i did when i got there was find the local bike shop and ask about places to ride around the area. I had also picked up the latest issue of AMB to keep myself occupied when the weather was a bit less then desirable.
After visiting the local bike shop and asking about the trails, i was invitied by the Owner/manager of the bike shop to join them in there social wednesday afternoon rides at there local track at kempsey. (about 30 mins from south west rocks). I thought "sweet get to ride the local trails and also won't get lost in the bush while doing so".
After getting back to our cabin and reading the latest AMB i also noticed that there "places that rock" was kempsey. Had a quick look and read through the article and checked out the local mountain bike clubs website and got super excited about the trails as they looked and sounded awesome.
I got there on the wednesday arvo and the guy i had spoken to at the bike shop wasn't there yet but a number of other riders were. And within a couple minutes of pulling up i had 2 or 3 of the guys standing there come over and introduce themselves and ask where i was from and so on. They all turned out to be a friendly bunch of guys and girls all there for the same reason, to have a bit of fun on the trails after a long day at work. The evening was finished with a couple of beers and a good old chat where again different people came over and introduced themselves to me and i was asked to come along again the next week.
In doing so i met a few different guys again and concluded my holiday with a super fun trail ride on some nice trails suitable for people of all skill levels with a bunch of "strangers" that were also good mates cause we were all there for the same reason. In leaving the ride that afternoon the guy from the bikeshop i originally spoke to came over and thanked me for coming along and said if im ever up this way again to drop in and ask about the rides. He also said if any of my friends from down here are up that way to do so as well and that they'd be more then welcome.
So guys if you are on holidays in that area and have the bikes there and want to explore some of the local trails, Drop into the local bikeshop in either Kempsey or southwest rocks and ask about there social rides. You will feel like a local straight away. They are a good bunch of guys (just like the people from scum) who all just want to have a bit of fun in the bush.
Anyways, thought i'd share that with the rest of scum. See you all at a race when i can eventually get to one.
