Have been talking about this for a long time but finally gonna do it. Just setting a couple of bikes for Matty and I to do some over nighters. Just recieved my tent today..woohoo super excited. Single man but is big enough for Matt and I. Any other SCUMers into this sort of thing? Advice, tips, places to go???... Russ

i could be very interested in this too. Waiting for a new bike makes it even harder.

S24o sounds like the go. Minimal planning, minimal time (for those with family commitments), night riding = heaps of fun.

Looking through these links I noticed most people tend to run a saddle bag/sack of some sort, I was going to fit a rear rack to mine and Matt's bikes. Anybody had experience with these on mtb's?

I'm going to run a rack becasue I don't have any fancy frame bags or even a drybag. I did a 5-day offroad tour through the Snowy's with a mate a few years back retracing a route I did 20 years ago. We had rear racks, bags and small backpacks and it worked fine. We obviously split food and gear between us but for an overnighter I shouldn't need much. I'm even thinking of forgoing a stove and just bringing a nice big roll or sandwichs for dinner. Less water needed too.
I want to test out the S24o idea and see if I like it before commiting to buying anything like tents or bags just yet. I just need a sleeping pad and I'm good to go with a rough setup. Fine for just one night.
Got plenty of 4WD camping gear though...

Yeah was thinking about not worrying about a tent and just using an SOL Bivy or similar but thought if Matty was coming along and the weather turned to poop we'll be in some sort of comfort....that's my excuse for being soft anyway! ;D x2 for the 4wd camping gear!! I'll be attending this on Saturday. Will gather info and take many pics. Would have liked to go to this but unfortunately won't be able to make it. Look forward to seeing what info you come back with. Once we all get set up, we might have to arrange a Scum S24o???....

x2 for the 4wd camping gear!! Just getting my slide-on camper sorted and I'll be ready for a bunch of camping and wheeling trips soon. Haven't done much this year and I'm missing it. Once we all get set up, we might have to arrange a Scum S24o???.... Great idea. A mass pedal to somewhere close and a camp in the forest. As weights not an issue for a short trip I'll pack a red wine bladder...

Today I had a bit of a play with my huge (for bike packing) 3 man dome tent and I found a way to set up the fly without needing the actual tent part. I also dumped the 3rd annex pole and swapped the steel pegs for alloy ones I had from and old hiking tent of years ago. The end result is I removed 2.9kgs of weight and am left with just 2.1kgs. A lot more managable, packs up smallish and is nice a big when set up. Cool!! Then I found I had yet another heavy duty tarp that is the right size to set up using both my bike wheels and a few pegs. It's heavier than the fly but I don't need any poles and less pegs so I end up saving about 700g over the fly setup. Slightly bulkier to carry though but no poles to carry. So now I don't know what to do. I'm thinking I'll take the tent fly this time around so the camp is good for the first time and leave the stealth camp for if I get a lightweight tarp and really get out there. Found and old space blanket and an inflatable pillow too so I just need the mattress pad and I'm good to go. Planning on getting a Roman 3/4 Plus. The extra thickness is needed for my aging bones... www.outdoorsandbeyondcamping.com.au/index.php/shop-online?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=140&category_id=19
